Data Quality at StemPunt: A guarantee for reliable insights

12 December 2024

At Motivaction, data quality is a top priority, especially within our proprietary panel, StemPunt. Ensuring high data quality guarantees that the insights we present to our clients are both reliable and representative. Maintaining this quality is not always a straightforward task. In this article, we discuss how StemPunt safeguards data quality and the processes and technologies we employ to keep our panel pure and representative.

1. Preventive measures

StemPunt has developed a series of preventive and corrective measures to mitigate potential quality risks before our studies commence:

  • Registration check: For each new registration, we verify whether the respondent has previously registered with another account. This additional check is especially conducted for recruitments through channels other than our standard methods.
  • Verification of existing data: At the start of each survey, we request previously known information from the respondent. If this does not match the data in our system, we exclude their responses from our reporting.
  • Monitoring changes: Quarterly, we review respondents who have modified fixed background information, such as date of birth or country of origin. Without a plausible explanation, this may lead to termination of panel membership.

2. Behavioral analysis during surveys

While respondents complete surveys, we monitor their response behavior to detect atypical activities. We focus on factors such as:

  • Completion speed: A respondent who consistently completes surveys faster than the average time is flagged as atypical.
  • Answer consistency: Respondents who frequently select "don't know" or repetitively provide the same answers draw our attention.
  • Frequency of atypical behavior: If a respondent repeatedly exhibits atypical behavior, it may ultimately result in the termination of their panel membership.

3. Technological measures and deduplication

To ensure that panel members do not participate multiple times in the same survey, we utilize technology to check digital identifiers such as IP addresses and device IDs, preventing multiple entries. Notable cases are regularly analyzed and, if necessary, removed from our system. Additionally, we restrict access to the panel website to the Netherlands (with some exceptions for Belgium and Germany) to ensure the responses remain representative of the Dutch market.

4. Webshop monitoring

Our panel offers rewards through a webshop, where we actively monitor for suspicious activities. Behaviors such as frequently changing an email address for orders or excessive use of rewards are closely tracked by our panel and database managers.

StemPunt is committed to high-quality data by taking proactive measures and continually evaluating how we can further optimize our panel. This enables us to provide our clients with reliable and representative insights, essential for sound market research and strategic decision-making. We continue to innovate and optimize to combat any form of fraud or insincere participation and to protect our data quality.
